GANSBAAI, SOUTH AFRICA – OCTOBER 19: A Great White Shark is attracted by a lure on the ‘Shark Lady Adventure Tour’ on October 19, 2009 in Gansbaai, South Africa. The lure, usually a tuna head, is attached to a buoy and thrown into the water in front of the cage with the divers. The waters off Gansbaai are the best place in the world to see Great White Sharks, due to the abundance of prey such as seals and penguins which live and breed on Dyer Island, which lies 8km from the mainland. Tiffany and her husband James were snorkeling on their last stop of their cruise, as reported by WSOC. All of a sudden, Tiffany was face to face with a shark.
“I wasn’t in pain, it just felt like I had bumped into something so I just casually turned to my right to look to see and that’s when I was face to face with the shark,” Tiffany said. “He had my whole arm in his mouth and he was just floating there, just staring at me.”
It took her a couple of tries, but eventually she was able to get away from the shark.
“I kept trying to yank my hand back and the last time I yanked he had cut it clean off so I was able to actually get free,” Tiffany said
Her husband rushed to her when he heard the scream, and thankfully, doctors in the Bahamas were able to stop the bleeding. A medical evacuation company helped get her to Carolinas Medical Center.
Tiffany is set to have surgery later this week to prepare her for a prosthetic arm.
