New Red Light Cameras Become Operational in August

(Fayetteville, N.C.) — Five new red light cameras are being installed as part of the City of Fayetteville’s red light safety program. The cameras become operational on Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 12 a.m., which begins the warning citation period. Violations will begin being issued on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 12 a.m.

The cameras are being installed at these intersections:
·       Skibo and Red Tip roads
·       Owen and Village drives
·       Raeford and Hope Mills roads
·       Grove and B streets
·       Grove and Ramsey streets

The five new cameras will add another tool to the tool belt for limiting red-light running in Fayetteville. Ten cameras are already in operation and have captured 33,621 incidents of residents running red lights. Approximately 96 percent of violators who have received and paid their red-light running violation did not receive a second citation.

Here are some more facts about the red-light camera program:
·       Most red-light running violations occur between 4 and 5 p.m.
·       The majority of red-light running violations captured by the Fayetteville red-light safety camera program occur on Fridays.
·       The red-light safety camera program has seen an average of 50 red-light running violations per day.
·       Proceeds from the program are donated to Cumberland County Schools.

Fittingly, National Stop on Red Week is being held around the same time the Fayetteville cameras go live, the week of Aug. 4-10.
