As Midland to closes in on No. 1 with “Drinkin’ Problem,” the band’s Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson is taking care to stay out of the sun. Why? They experienced a one-of-a-kind Florida sunburn.

The guys have spent a lot of time touring in the Northeast and Midwest in recent months wheree sunburns weren’t a common occurrence. That changed when tour routing took them to sunny Florida not long ago. “Sure enough, we find ourselves in Pensacola, Florida, white sand beaches with an entire afternoon off about six weeks ago,” the trio’s Mark Wystrach says through their record label. “And we went out to the beach and there was some oil that we bought, like a tanning oil, and long story short, Cameron and Jess had not been in the sun for a long, long time and they were exposed to about six hours of Florida whit-sand-beach sun and they literally gave themselves sun poisoning.”

The burns were so severe that their skin was swelling. “These guys could not get any relief,” Mark continues. “So there’s a video of Cam rubbing aloe, about every hour he would just pull his pants down and just start rubbing aloe everywhere he could. These guys were miserable for about seven days after that.”

“A lot of pain,” Jess interjects.

“It was pretty funny,” Mark adds. “So kids out there, sun block, sun block! Put your sun block on and don’t try to jump right back into full summer tan in one session.”
