Remember “Fishin’ In The Dark” from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? Florida Georgia Line‘s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard do, too. It was part of the inspiration behind their new single, in fact.
“Fishin’ In The Dark” was a hit for NGDB in 1987, and the guys of FGL had it in mind when they sat down to write their current single “Smooth.” “We wrote that late in the fall out at Tyler’s farm with Nicole Clawson and George Schmidt [and Jordan Schmidt]” Brian Kelley says through the duo’s record label. “It was our first time [writing together] and it was a beautiful kind of chilly day. I remember I told Jordan to make kind of a modern day ‘Fishin’ in the Dark’ track, and he showed up with that track. Nicole had the title.
Tyler Hubbard contributed the lyric “Good Lord Almighty,” which BK says led the team to the chorus. “We just wrote real hard that day and had a lot of fun,” Brian says. “It’s something that it’s a little swampy, it’s a little woodsy, and really fun to play live.”
