Sarah's Fitness Journey: Hating This, But Sticking to It!

Well here I am, my first check-in. And let me tell you, it’s not going so hot! I really thought I would be able to “get back on the horse” without difficulty but it has indeed been difficult! Did I devour a whole small pizza on Monday? Yes. Yes I did. Proudly. But after disappointing myself with the pizza incident, I decided to take initiative and cook some healthy meals ahead.

What I really need to focus on is creating a schedule and sticking to it. I know some folks like to workout early in the morning before anything else so it’s out of the way.  I know others get it in after work because it’s more convenient. I however, am a huge fan of working out in the afternoon! Plus I get to eat lunch right after!

First thing I did was write out what every single meal and snack will be for that week. It’s hanging on my fridge so I see it every single time I enter the kitchen. Crossing items off that list gives me a sense of fulfillment and makes me happy that I’m working actively towards my goals.

Next, I had to just bite the bullet and go to the gym! I won’t sugar coat it for you – I HATED it! There were only two other people there when I went, which was awesome because I hate crowds. However, they were both men and I felt intimidated. I know that men and women have very different goals, work with very different weights, and have very different techniques… but I couldn’t help but feel self-conscious as I stood there struggling with my 20 pound dumbbell as the gym-bro beside me crushed it with 100+ pound weights.

But I put on my music, did my best to focus on me, and stayed in my lane. It did help, and I’m feeling really positive after that first workout. I was happy I stuck with it and my plan moving forward is to work on smaller goals. For instance, my goal this week is to go to the gym 3 times and include 1 day of hiking. Having a smaller, more attainable goal on a weekly or even daily basis is going to feel much easier to achieve.
