WKML's Don Chase and Sarah celebrate with Jonathan Flores Hernandez, the winner of the Driven 2 Excel car from Lumberton Honda.

LUMBERTON — Years of hard work and dedication paid off for Jonathan Flores Hernandez Wednesday night. The recent St. Paul’s High School graduate won a new car in Beasley Media Group’s Driven 2 Excel program, sponsored by Lumberton Honda.

Beasley Media of Fayetteville (Foxy 99, WKML, My Kiss Radio, Sunny 94.3, 96.5 BOB FM, Old School 107.7) awarded Jonathan a brand new 2019 Honda Fit from Lumberton Honda for his academic and attendance achievements this school year. To qualify, students had to maintain a GPA of 3.2 for each grading period of the 2018-2019 school year, and have had no more than five unexcused absences. The car was awarded at a special event Wednesday evening at Lumberton Honda.

“I’m so excited that this works and I no longer have to borrow my parents’ car to go to work,” Flores Hernandez said. “I didn’t think I would win, but when I heard my name called my heart sank. I’m still in shock.”

Jonathan, who currently works at Chick-fil-A, plans to attend Robeson Community College in the fall and hopes for a career in electrical engineering.

“This is so great! My son is a very serious student,” Jonathan’s father Amando Florez said through a translator. “He should definitely not take this for granted. He’s so blessed to have this happen. But be careful!”

And while, Jonathan and his family worked hard to get to this point, it also wouldn’t be possible without the hard work amazing teachers put in along the way. To help thank teachers in Robeson County for their hard work, Beasley and Biggs Park Mall awarded a $1,000 shopping spree to one dedicated teacher.

Phillip Tyler, coincidentally also from St. Paul’s High School won this year’s shopping spree.

Lumberton Honda, Lumbee River EMC, Biggs Park Mall and the U.S. Army are proudly supporting this year’s Driven 2 Excel program in Robeson County.
