North Carolina Sand Dunes Are Among The Most Magnificent In The U.S.
If you travel along the outer banks of North Carolina, you will undoubtedly find some stunning sites along the coastline. One of them is Jockey’s Ridge State Park.
In fact, this area was named among the best sand dunes in America in a recent feature by the Travel Channel. “These massive sand mountains around the U.S. are worth taking a few vacation days,” Travel Channel states about the eight places their feature highlights.
Of the eight magnificent sand dunes in America named on the Travel Channels feature, Jockey’s Ridge State Park was the only location on the East Coast to make the list.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park contains the tallest sand dune on the east coast
This state park is the most visited in the state of North Carolina. It covers 427 acres and reaches an elevation of 100 feet. At the main access point of Jockey’s Ridge, hiking and picnicking are among the most popular activities to partake in. In addition, you can sandboard or hang glide to get a unique view of the sand dunes.
“Hang gliding is a hallmark activity at the park, and a private concessionaire offers lessons,” NC Parks explains. Part of the reason hang gliding is so popular here is because there are numerous takeoff points.
Along the water, visitors can paddle, swim or kiteboard. Speaking of kites, this is an ideal area for flying kites. “On breezy days, bring a kite to fly from the top of the ridge,” Travel Channel suggests.
Lastly, Jockey’s Ridge State Park offers three different trails to explore. The “Tracks in the Sand” trail is the longest option. It’s a 1.2 mile loop through the sand, and is more difficult than the other options. Please note that walking in the sand is more difficult than walking on a more solid surface.
North Carolina Has One of the Best Winter Getaways in the U.S.
It’s never too early to start planning an exciting winter getaway, especially since the most popular winter vacation spots get booked up quickly. The good news, though, is that most people take vacations in the summer, so traveling in the winter can be a bit more relaxing. You are also able to usually find better travel rates during the winter season, except during the holidays. If you don’t have to travel during the holidays, just don’t, because it’s a mess. So, what are the best winter getaways in the U.S.? North Carolina has one of them.
I’ve researched some of the most popular winter vacation destinations in hopes of finding the perfect spot. The following list includes not just sunny, warm getaways, but also some areas that people who love snow can enjoy. Honestly, many people who live in a warm climate like to flock to a snowy location for a bit during the winter to get that seasonal experience, even if that seems counter intuitive. Of course, those who live in the northern parts of America love to go to a warm spot and get away from their daily lives filled with snow and ice.
I’m a Michigan girl, so I’m very familiar with the cold and ice in the winter. Not that I like it. Each year, I say I’m going to escape, even if it’s just for a few days, to a warmer location. But, I never do. Maybe this year will be different. Looking at vacation rates, it’s fairly easy to find some good deals, again, if it’s not during the holiday travel season. Read on for some of the bets winter getaways in the U.S., based on my research. What’s your favorite winter vacation spot? Reach out to me on social media here and let me know. Have a fantastic winter, and stay warm.
