Local schools launched a push for public input about phone restrictions. The new rules must take effect for 2025-26 to meet state requirements.
After Gov. Josh Stein put his name on House Bill 959 on July 1, school staff drafted guidelines. Every public school in North Carolina must now spell out clear device limits.
"The proposed CCS policy is designed to reduce distractions, protect instructional time and support safe, respectful learning environments across all grade levels," a release from CCS said. "It outlines expectations for student use of personal devices such as cellphones, earbuds and smartwatches, with reasonable exceptions for students with medical needs, individual learning plans or safety supports."
The district wants input from all sides. Kids, staff, families, and neighbors have until 5 p.m. on July 21 to weigh in. The feedback will shape talks at the Board's Policy meeting on August 5.
New limits would affect phones, wireless earbuds, and smartwatches in class. But exceptions exist. Kids with health needs, special education plans, or safety issues can still keep their devices.
Schools across North Carolina face similar challenges with classroom tech. This push puts the state in step with others who demand clear rules about student devices.
