A new mural will soon brighten North Chestnut Street. Main Street Lumberton plans a public painting day on October 18, 2025, at 302 North Chestnut. The project marks the nationwide America 250 festivities. (Note the original date of October 11 has been postponed due to weather.)

From morning till mid-afternoon, locals can grab brushes and add their touch to the wall's lower section. Artist Max Dowdle will guide participants as they fill in the bottom eight to 10 feet. Three standout figures from Robeson County take center stage in this street art.

The wall will honor shipping pioneer Malcom McLean, who changed world trade with his container design. It also pays tribute to Thomas Oxendine, who broke barriers as the first Native American to fly Navy aircraft. The third spot goes to Ida Van Smith, a groundbreaking Black woman who taught others to soar through the skies.

This local effort joins thousands across the U.S. marking 250 years since 1776. The mural brings neighbors together while showing off the town's rich past. Short brushstrokes will build a big picture of pride.

Friends of Main Street Lumberton wants young hands involved. "The event is perfect for Boy Scouts, youth groups and families to get involved, volunteer and make history," they said, per The Robesonian.

No need to bring supplies. Paint and tools await eager artists. Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to add your mark to this piece of history.

The downtown spot puts this artwork where everyone can see it. As America nears its quarter-millennium birthday, this wall will tell stories of local heroes who shaped the nation. Their tales will inspire passersby for years to come.
