Next week marks the start of something special at West Regional Library in Fayetteville. At 11 a.m. on Oct. 21, kids will get their first look at a brand-new play space built with their needs in mind.
The $44,680 area features dim lights, touch-friendly panels, and gear picked just for children who need extra sensory support.
"We are excited to expand our sensory offerings to the western part of the county," said Cumberland County Public Library Director Heather Hall in a news release. "This play space is a continuation of our commitment to creating inclusive environments where all children, regardless of ability, can grow, learn, and thrive."
Thanks to the William F. Bethune Charitable Endowment for Children with Disabilities of Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc., this project came to life through their grant funding. It adds another piece to the library's push for better access.
Inside, kids can touch, hear, and see in ways that work best for them. Soft surfaces mix with gentle sounds. Light shows dance across walls. It's built as a safe spot where families can bring children who need a careful approach to play.
This isn't the first such space in town. Both Headquarters and North Regional sites already welcome kids with similar areas. Plus, at any of the eight branches, children can now use tools like weighted pads, sound-blocking headphones, dark glasses, and items to keep busy hands happy.
