Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle handed over a check for $45,000 to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina, turning an NFL fine into a fundraising campaign. The donation arrived two weeks after the league penalized him for a touchdown celebration during Week 9 against Green Bay.

The NFL fined Dowdle nearly $15,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. He had scored his second touchdown at Lambeau Field on Nov. 2 and celebrated with a dance inspired by a Keegan-Michael Key comedy sketch from "Key & Peele." The celebration included two hip thrusts. Officials threw a flag.

The 5-foot-11, 211-pound back launched a GoFundMe page the following Wednesday. He announced the fundraiser would benefit the Children's Home Society of North Carolina, an organization that pairs children with adoptive parents and foster homes while offering support throughout the adoption process.

Dowdle set an initial goal of $11,000. Donors reached it within hours. The campaign then passed a second target of $20,000 by Thursday evening. Keegan-Michael Key donated $15,000 himself after appearing at a team meeting.

"It was surprising how much we were able to raise," said Dowdle, according to The Charlotte Observer. "A lot of athletes have platforms, and I was happy I was able to use my platform in a positive way for this to turn out this good."

The former undrafted player from South Carolina ranks third in the NFL in rushing yards through 10 weeks. Against New Orleans in Week 10, he carried the ball 18 times for 53 yards and added three receptions for 10 yards.

Brian Maness, president and CEO of Children's Home Society of North Carolina, praised the effort. "Raising over $45,000, it's hard to even express how much we appreciate that," said Maness, per The Charlotte Observer. "But even beyond the financial support, the level of interest we've been receiving from folks who care about kids, who care about families, and want to help, whether it's financial or otherwise — it's been terrific."

Dowdle visited the organization's Charlotte offices Friday. He signed footballs and pennants for children. He offered fist bumps. The GoFundMe page remained active as of Friday afternoon.

Dowdle made it clear he plans to avoid future penalties. "No pump, no fine," he told reporters, per Clutchpoints.com.
