With this upcoming winter storm expected to hit half of the country, everyone is in preparation mode. Stocking up on groceries. Charging all devices. Make sure you have your home essentials. It's a lot to do and so little time. We're still unsure how severe this may be for some regions, but better to be safe than sorry. So, what should you do to prepare for the upcoming winter storm?

We're looking at information from the American Red Cross, the National Weather Service, and more to gather this list. Be sure to check your local stores and weather stations for details on what to expect from your region.

What Should You Do Before the Storm Hits?

  • Stay warm indoors to prevent frostbite and hypothermia
  • Drink plenty of warm fluids, but avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Wear layers if you must go outdoors
  • Gather emergency supplies such as food, water, and medication before the storm hits your area.
  • Set aside gallons of water in case you lose access to drinking water

What Should You Do During a Winter Storm?

  • Be careful with space heaters and fireplaces to prevent house fires
  • Use battery-operated lights and flashlights should you lose power
  • Only use generators, grills, and camp stoves outdoors and away from windows
  • If you have to drive, be sure to have blankets, rain/snow gear, canned foods, a cell phone for communication, and plan to only travel during the daylight

What to Do After a Winter Storm

  • Use extreme caution when outside walking or driving on ice that may remain in the area
  • Avoid damaged or fallen power lines
  • Beware of branches, trees, or buildings where ice may fall from
  • Find a warming center near you shall your home be too cold (public facilities, shopping malls, department stores, etc.)
  • Eat healthy foods and be sure to drink water to stay hydrated

Throughout this storm, be sure to follow your local weather services, radio stations, and news stations to ensure that you are aware of any alerts in your area. Best to be safe and warm as much as you can throughout this winter storm.
