So let me ask, what do you like to do in your spare time? What hobbies do you prefer? Where do you prefer to surf on the internet or which apps do you click? A couple days ago I found myself with a few hours of free! time and I took the opportunity to catch up on my music and entertainment news from the last couple of weeks. One story really caught my attention when it hinted around about the possible end of the road for one of the greatest Rock groups of all time.

If you took me back to my Bladenboro High School days of the mid to late 1970s and said Donald, you only get to choose one Rock album from that time period and you must listen to at least one song from that album every day for the rest of your life. Would I agree to that challenge? You bet. Now comes the hard part. I must give credit where it is due and brag on the artists and the groups the created the musical soundtrack for a special time in my life. In my humble opinion, the music was beyond awesome.

Now, back to the task at hand. Choose one album. I was and still am a huge Boston fan. The “Saturday Night Fever” movie soundtrack has to be considered. Then, there’s The Eagles “Hotel California,” Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and “Dark Side of the Moon.” Billy Joel’s “52nd Street” comes to mind along with Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall.” I actually could name a bunch more, but if I were forced to choose one album from the 1970’s, I probably would pick “Rumours” from Fleetwood Mac. Not only was it an awesome project in 1977 that produced a ton of great music.

Earlier, I mentioned that it might be the end for one of the most popular rock groups of all time. Both Stevie Nicks and drummer Mick Fleetwood said how can Fleetwood Mac continue without Christine. Christine was magnificent with her songwriting ability, playing the Hammond organ and incredible vocals on almost every Fleetwood Mac song. Sadly, Christine passed away last November.

If I may, please allow me to take you back to the seventies and eighties with just a few of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest songs. It is my pleasure to share the playlist below. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

  • Fleetwood Mac "Dreams"

In an interview in Blender magazine, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks said she used a piano owned by the legendary Sly & the Family Stone to help her develop the hit song “Dreams.” From the 1977 album “Rumours,” check out Fleetwood Mac and “Dreams.”

  • Fleetwood Mac "You Make Loving Fun"

I love reading about the stories behind the songs and this is one of my favorites. Songwriter/keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie once said that her husband, Fleetwood Mac bass player John McVie thought her song “You Make Loving Fun” was about her dog. We later learned that the song was actually about her new love, Curry Grant who just happened to be the lighting director for the band. Juicy!

  • Fleetwood Mac "Say You Love Me"

In my humble opinion, without songwriter Christine McVie, there probably would not be a Fleetwood Mac. Our next tune is the title track from FM’s self-titled album. “Say You Love Me” went as high as number eleven in 1975. “Say You Love Me” was written by Christine during her marriage to bassist John McVie.

  • Fleetwood Mac "Don't Stop"

Not to bring politics into the conversation, but let me congratulate President Bill Clinton who chose Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” as his theme while campaigning for the top office in 1992. The tune went all the way to number one in 1977 on the Cashbox magazine music survey.

  • Fleetwood Mac "Go Your Own Way"

I mentioned earlier that I love the juicy stories behind some of the greatest songs ever recorded. Our next tune was written by Fleetwood Mac vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Not only did Buckingham write the song about his breakup with fellow vocalist Stevie Nicks but somehow the two remained in the band. Listen for the line “packing up shacking up.” The lyric really irritated Stevie Nicks. From 1977, Fleetwood Mac “Go Your Own Way.”

  • Fleetwood Mac "Rhiannon"

If you’re a fan of “The Sopranos” tv series, this Fleetwood Mac song was heard in one of the episodes a few years ago. For the band, what an honor it must have been for Rolling Stone to name the tune one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Check out Fleetwood Mac and “Rhiannon.”

  • Fleetwood Mac "Gypsy"

Like our previous song “Rhiannon,” Stevie Nicks also penned the tune “Gypsy.” Nicks said the inspiration for the song came before she joined Fleetwood Mac. At the time, she and Lindsay Buckingham were in a relationship and times were tough. From the “Mirage” album, take a listen to “Gypsy” from Fleetwood Mac.

  • Fleetwood Mac "Everywhere"

Let’s go back to the year 1987 for a Fleetwood Mac song that spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. It was also a top twenty hit on the Billboard hot 100 chart. From their “Tango In the Night” album, Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere.”

  • Fleetwood Mac "Hold Me"

Our final song is one of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest. Unbelievably, “Hold Me” was locked in as the number four tune for an amazing seven weeks in a row in 1982. At the time, the band Survivor, John Cougar and The Steve Miller Band” ruled the Billboard hot 100 chart. From the band’s thirteenth studio album, check out Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham sharing lead vocals on Fleetwood Mac’s “Hold Me.”
