Who does UNC football coach Mack Brown like to jam out to when he's off the field?

College football season is back in action in North Carolina bay-beeeee! The roar of the stadium crowds, the electrifying plays, the drunken face-painted fans sloppily singing along to Copperhead Road at the tailgate party. I mean what’s not to love? And speaking of proper gameday tunes, have you ever wondered what the coaches blast through their headphones before a game? Well wonder no more!

In anticipation of the new football season, the sports betting analysis company Action Network asked coaches across different conferences who their favorite artists were. If you don’t feel like playing the guessing game, the answers have been conveniently compiled by Whiskey Riff as well. It should come as no surprise that country music absolutely dominated the list. George Strait was the most popular country artist among coaches, totaling up an impressive eight picks. Other notable coach-favored country artists include the Chief Eric Church, Luke Combs, Kane Brown, Chris Stapleton, Kenny Chesney, Zach Bryan, just to name a few. But where do the North Carolina college coaches stand musically?

Honestly, the musical tastes of Carolina coaches are surprisingly diverse. While there’s definitely a heavy country presence on the playlist, each coach’s favorite artists span across multiple genres and eras. I’m a UNC fan born and raised, so I bleed Carolina blue across all college sports. And without giving too much away, I’ll just say I’m quite pleased with Tarheels coach Mack Brown’s pick. But credit where it’s due, Blue Devils coach Mike Elko’s favorite artist is a solid choice as well! And that’s the only time you’ll ever hear me compliment Duke about anything. Great, now I have to make sure my parents never find this article.

So who is your favorite North Carolina college football coach listening to on loop before their players take the field? Let’s find out!

  • App State's Shawn Clark - Luke Combs

Starting strong with some Carolina country! It makes sense that the Mountaineers coach would have such fondness for the country megastar. Luke was a student at App State and performed at different clubs across Boone while he was on the come up.

  • Wake Forest's Dave Clawson - Talking Heads

While this is certainly one of the more eclectic musical picks among the Carolina coaches, it shouldn’t really be a surprise to any Wake Forest fans. Head coach Dave Clawson’s fandom toward the 80s new wave group has been a matter of public record for awhile now. But will the Demon Deacons’ gameplay this season be as consistent as Dave’s musical stylings? Time will tell!

  • Charlotte's Biff Poggi - Frank Sinatra

Can’t beat the classics, at least that’s what Niners coach Biff thinks. In a way it’s kind of genius. If they win then he’s blasting My Way, and if they lose he’s driving home listening to That’s Life for some late night lamenting.

  • ECU's Mike Houston - Journey

Mike, be honest. Are you really a fan of Journey? Or are you just a fan of that one song of theirs that blares at every football game? Journey does slap though, I’ll give him that.

  • NC State's Dave Doeren - Merle Haggard

Ahh a classic country aficionado. Good on ya, Dave! Here’s hoping the Wolfpack’s opponents see the “Fightin’ Side” of them.

  • Duke's Mike Elko - Jay-Z

Not gonna lie, this one caught me way off guard. I never would’ve pegged Elko for a HOV fan, but I respect the choice. (Please note that this respect only extends to Mike Elko as a person and is in no way representative of my thoughts toward any Duke sports program)

  • UNC's Mack Brown - Eric Church

Ahh Heel yeah! I told you coach Mack didn’t disappoint. The Chief is probably my all time favorite country artist, so it does my heart good to know that the Tarheels football coach has got him at #1 on his playlist. Mack, if you’re reading this, you’re welcome to call into my show and request Eric Church anytime. Also, can I get Drake Maye’s autograph?
