The Big Wake Up With Don Chase and Sarah

Any list of films from Sarah has to include a Harry Potter inclusion, but especially when it comes to the spooky season!

It’s officially Spooky Season in Fayetteville and that means spooky movies time! The temps are finally dropping. Pumpkin Spice everything is everywhere! The Spirit Halloween stores are popping up in every strip mall. And it’s time to ramp up the Halloween festivities.

Plus this weekend marks the release of Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+. So why not start divulging in your favorite Halloween themed movies? Nothing is better than curling up on a Friday night with a warm drink, blanket, snacks, and a good movie!

In honor of the Halloween season, I’ve narrowed down my long, long list of favorite seasonal movies into my top 5. It was a difficult task, but I think each of these movies touches on a different theme and can appeal to multiple audiences!

  • Hocus Pocus

“Oh look! Another glorious morning. Makes me sick!” Hocus Pocus is a classic! As a kid growing up in the 90s when this movie was released, this film is ingrained in my head. I was convinced that I was Dani and that I would befriend a talking cat. The quotes from this movie are incredible, and it’s my comfort movie. Once it hits mid-September, it’s a free for all on Hocus Pocus. At minimum, it needs to be watched once a week. You can have it on in the background while cooking or curled up on a cool and rainy autumn day.

  • Practical Magic

This is one of those movies that I have vivid memories of watching with my sister at my Aunt’s house every year. Maybe that’s why it’s so special to me. Not only is the story line incredible, but it’s about sisters. It’s a romance, it’s a fantasy, and it has Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman! What more do you need at Halloween time?! Oh, and the Midnight Margaritas scene. Trust me, if you’ve seen it, you know it!

  • Clue

Ok, hear me out. I know this isn’t necessarily a “Halloween” movie. BUT! It has Tim Curry. AND Christopher Lloyd! And more insanely talented comedic actors. This movie is exactly what you think it is, based off the popular board game of the same name. So the whole murder mystery thing is what makes it great for Halloween. But the comedy aspect of this movie can’t be overlooked. It’s so wonderfully subtle. Watch this movie once, and I promise it will be added to your personal watch list again every year.

  • The Strangers

Ok, I had to add an actual horror movie to the list! The Strangers, to me, is one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve ever seen. I have never left a movie so terrified. It’s one of those movies where nothing ever really happens. But the entire time you are on edge and scared out of your mind. You know you are waiting for it all to hit the fan. And when it does, it’s so gruesome to watch. To say I had trouble falling asleep afterward would be an understatement.

  • Harry Potter

You didn’t think I would go this whole list without mentioning Harry Potter, did you?! HA! Any excuse to mention my love of Harry Potter, I will take! For Halloween, it’s all about the very first Harry Potter film – The Sorcerer’s Stone. Not only because of the nostalgia and that it’s centered around witches and wizards, but because of the classic scene where the students are enjoying the Halloween Feast in the Great Hall! All the decorations, the thunderstorm, the Halloween food! We all know Harry Potter holds a special place in my heart. Halloween is the perfect time to re-watch!
