‘Black Widow,’ ‘Cruella,’ More: Blockbusters Will Hit Disney+, Theaters Simultaneously
Marvel and Disney just announced that they have, once again, changed the release date of the highly anticipatedĀ Black WidowĀ film, starring ScarlettĀ Johansson.
In a social media post, they announced, “Black Widow in theaters July 9 and on #DisneyPlus with Premier Access. Additional fees required.” Which means that you can watch the film on Disney Plus by paying extra, which is something that they’ve already done withĀ Raya and the Last DragonĀ and Mulan. You need a Disney+ subscription to be able to watch, and you also have to pay an extra fee (in the case ofĀ RayĀ and the Last Dragon, it was $29.99).
Black Widow was originally scheduled for May of 2020, but is a flashback film, taking place after 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and before 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.
Per Marvel, “in Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.” Besides Scarlett Johansson, the film features Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.
Another Marvel film,Ā Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsĀ will hit theaters on September 3.
Black Widow is not the only big Disney film that will be available on Disney+ at the same time that it hits theaters.Ā Cruella, starring Emma Stone as the iconic dog-stealing villain, will premiere May 28 as planned, but will also be available on Disney+ that same day.
Meanwhile, Pixar’sĀ LucaĀ won’t be released in theaters at all, and will be available on Disney+ starting on June 18.
Other upcoming Disney films include Ryan Reynolds’Ā Free-GuyĀ (August 13),Ā The King’s ManĀ (December 22) ,Ā Deep WaterĀ (January 14, 2022) andĀ Death On The NileĀ (February 11, 2022).
