Today is Sunday, March 3, the 63rd day in the year. There are 303 days left in 2024.
Today on Talkback we’ll meet Tom Lamont, director of Community Engagement in what is called “Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina” but, colloquially, we know as “Lake Waccamaw Childrens Home.” Actually 70 years old very soon. And you’ll also learn, in its 70 years, what began as an orphanage for boys has grown in its scope and roles – even having an office in Fayetteville for the past 25 years! Like all signature backstop charitable efforts in our area – the Salvation Army and United Way among them, donation streams they depend on have changed in the new post-pandemic economy! But their needs continue to grow with their added contributions to the children they serve. As we learn, helping children disadvantaged through no fault of their own find their way to productivity and self-sufficiency is exciting work.
