Brantley Gilbert On What Makes A Song His
A Brantley Gilbert song is unmistakable. After all, his voice is unique in country music. There are other things that makes a song his, however, and he’s sharing some of that in a new interview.
According to his record label, Brantley first insists on being among the songs’ writers. “I have to be a writer on it,” he explains in the label interview. “I have to at least have co-written it. And that could just be a personal thing I guess, but I just feel closer when I’ve had the opportunity to make sure it’s my story and it reflects something that I’ve been through in my life … it just feels dishonest to me if that’s not the case.”

There are other aspects of the song that are important, too. “The song’s got to have a little bit of everything,” he says. “And it depends on what emotion or what form of expression [I’m] going with … If I’m angry, I want you to be able to feel it and hear it. If I’m sad it’s a different set of chords [and] a different melody structure. When all of those things come together and you hear a song and it hits you in the chest … those are the ones I gravitate towards.”
Fans can hear plenty of those songs on Brantley’s latest album The Devil Don’t Sleep, which is available here. They can hear ’em, too, on Brantley’s The Ones That Like Me Tour beginning early next year. Check out a list dates here.
