Carly Pearce told us about her latest video, "What He Didn't Do," and the fact that the underwater video made her mother cry.

Carly told us, "Yeah, I played it for her, and I thought that she would really love it just because it's so beautiful. She started crying when it was over, and she told me that she didn't like it. I asked her why, and she said because it was too real of what happened. I was kind of like, 'That's great, Mom. That's exactly what I was lookin' for. Thank you.'"

She added, "But as a mother, I think she knew what I was trying to convey throughout the video, and I think it took her to a real emotional place of knowing that I really did feel like I was drowning."

Pearce enlisted a friend to direct the video, who also directed her last video, "Never Wanted To Be That Girl." Carly said, "Alexa Campbell, who directed the video, is also my tour photographer. So, these are the first videos that she's really done. And when we were out somewhere, I knew that I wanted her to do this video, more so because she kind of lived that portion of my life with me and just knew the ins and outs of where that story really came from."

She continued, "She came to me, and she kind of had a bit of a concept as far as she said that she saw me underwater. I feel like she and I kind of talked through that and kinda what that meant. She showed me some examples of what she was kind of seeing. We just came to the conclusion of this video would be so powerful to take a more artistic direction, and not just spell it out, having myself play out the song."

Pearce recently told us that she did all the underwater work in the video herself, and it wasn't easy. She revealed, "It was me. The whole video is me. I underestimated how difficult it would be to swim underwater with a large wedding dress on. It was really, really crazy to feel the weight of that, but I feel like it almost helped me to get it into the character some. It scared me because at times, you know, you think, oh, I know how to swim. But when you feel that kind of weight really pulling you down, it's quite scary."

The 2023 CMT Music Awards aired live from Austin, Texas, last night (4/2). It was the first time the show was not held in Nashville. The show saw many big moments. From first-time wins for multiple winners, Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson, to the many big performances, co-hosts Kane Brown and Kelsea Ballerini made their third time hosting the show a true charm.

As we look to the next country music award show in May from the Academy of Country Music, we look back at the big moments and photos from country music in the heart of Texas at the CMT Music Awards, both on stage and backstage.
