Keith Urban: How He ‘Hooked’ Nicole Kidman On Country Music

It's fun to watch country music award shows over the last 17 years and see Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman in the first few rows jamming, clapping, and smiling to country music. Since she married Keith Urban in 2006, we have all enjoyed it.

Not long ago, Keith told me how he first introduced country music to Kidman. He revealed, "The very first song I played here was 'Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way' by Waylon Jennings. I didn't tell her anything, she just got in the car one day, and I hit play, and that kick drum started, and the guitar started."

Urban adds, "She starts bopping her head and says, 'Aw, I like this! What's this?' So she was hooked from then on."

In the same interview, Keith told me about the music that his family listened to when he was a kid in Australia. He offered, "There was such a healthy mix of contemporary country music from my dad's record collection. But also, I was just spoon-fed radio, Top 40 radio as a little kid; even in Dad's car, we always listened to the radio. Even in the house, we seemed to listen to the radio more than we watched TV."

Kidman recently shared a video clip of her surprising fans in Las Vegas by joining Keith Urban on stage during one of his shows over the weekend. She posted the video clip to Instagram, showing her 9 million followers Keith introducing her on her birthday.

Urban tells the crowd in the video, "We've got some birthdays in the house, we've got teachers in the house, we've got wives in the house..." as he says that, he brings Nicole on stage, and the audience screams. Keith continued, "Barefooted wife, by the way, she's a sunshine hippie." The couple then hugs on stage, and Keith says, "Happy Birthday, baby girl." he then sings a bit of a Loretta Lynn classic country song, "You're Lookin' At Country," singing, "I love running barefooted through the old corn fields, and I love my country ham."

Nicole captioned, "Last night in Vegas (heart emoji). Come and see the show!"

It's hard to get more glamorous  than country superstar Keith Urban and his wife, Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman. The couple finds their way to the red carpet of the most glamorous music and film award shows. They are usually sitting in the first couple of rows at the shows.

Keith and Nicole wed in 2006 in a large ceremony in their native Australia. Nicole often supports Urban on the road and out and about in Nashville. She was seen at the 2022 CMA Fest jamming to her husband's tunes backstage. Keith is by his wife's side at many movie premieres. He never misses an award show where she is honored for her talent.

And then there are the trips abroad, like when Urban recently jetted off to Paris for a fashion show Kidman was a part of. The couple has two daughters that are very rarely photographed. Keith told us that the only time he and his famous wife turn down autograph seekers and photo-takers is when the girls are by their side.
