Lainey Wilson: Why She Keeps Her People Close
Lainey Wilson worked hard for years in Nashville to become a superstar. When we talked to her recently, Lainey told us what keeps her going and her secret for career happiness.
Wilson said, “I keep my people close. I really do. I keep my family close. I talk to my nephews every day, Facetiming them and stuff. I don’t get to see them in person, but they’re the ones who keep me going. They are the ones who remind me I am who I am and that I cannot be Lainey the artist if I’m not Lainey the sister, Lainey the friend, Lainey the daughter, Lainey the girlfriend…all of those things.”
She added, “I’m figuring out that it’s really important to keep your people close. At the end of the day, I truly do think that the grit is truly in my blood. It’s who I am. I think it’s been like generations of people who are really determined about things. I come from five generations of farmers, and if you know anything about farming, you know that you’ve got to have that kind of determination.”

Lainey and Jelly Roll are pretty close and call each other dear friends and even family. The two are together a lot, and even though she looks at his face often, Lainey admits she misses what others see right away when they look at Jelly.
She told us in an interview with Jelly next to her recently, “Let me say something about Jelly’s tattoos. This shows you how I see his soul; one day, my sister was like, ‘What do Jelly’s tattoos on his face say?’ And I was like, ‘He’s got face tattoos?’ I didn’t even realize he had any on his face. That’s how much I see him and who he is to his core.”
Wilson said of her having her own ink, “I don’t have a tattoo, but if anyone could talk me into getting one, it’s probably him.”
Jelly told us of his many tattoos, “I’ve got so many bad tattoos, I don’t care to have anymore. I get tour tattoos.”
