Kacey Musgraves: ‘True Leaders Don’t Stand Back And Watch The World Burn’
Kacey Musgraves performed at Lollapalooza over the weekend (8/4) and took a moment to respond to the two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio that killed 29 people; she followed that up with tweets expressing her views about gun control, and defending her right to not just “stick to the music.”
Kacey told the crowd before an emotional performance of “Rainbow,” “I just wanted to take a second to say thank you, not only for just supporting me and my music but to everybody out here tonight that still has the bravery to show up and come to a large music festival,” referencing the two mass shootings.
She continued, “I can’t even believe that we’re having to process the s— that’s happening in the last twenty-four hours, much less everything that’s happened in the last two-hundred and f–king fifteen days in America. I don’t know what the answer is but obviously something has to be f–king done.”
Predictably, some of her fans were upset by this, so she took to twitter to discuss the matter further. he retweeted a fan who posted a video of her speaking from the stage, saying, “Don’t you hear us, @realDonaldTrump? Don’t you hear our pain? You have the power to become a hero. Why don’t you take it?”
She continued addressing the President, saying, “For a man who clearly loves being well-liked, it’s indescribably mind-numbing to see him blatantly and murderously ignore doing ONE THING that would not only make people happy but would SAVE PEOPLE’S LIVES. True leaders don’t stand back and watch the world burn.
@realDonaldTrump.”
She also addressed the frequent complaints that “musicans should stick to music,” saying, “I love keeping things about the music and usually stay out of politics publicly UNTIL it barrels past political party preference points and dangerously encroaches on fundamental human rights. It’s then not political issue anymore. It’s a matter of heart. Of humanity. Of survival.”
She responded to someone who insinuated that stance might alienate many of her fans, saying, “Stick to the singing Kacey. You do realize most of your fans are packing at your shows don’t you?” She responded, “Let me be clear – I’m from Texas. I grew up around hunting and guns. There’s a time and place for that and even self protection in ways..but this is different. The system is majorly flawed and NOBODY NEEDS ANYTHING REMOTELY AUTOMATIC. PERIOD. They’re mass killing machines.”
She concluded, “Hold your politicians accountable. Hold the president accountable. Start paying attention to actual ways we can make change happen. I promise I will too… Love to anyone out there w/ fear & anxiety like me. Hold on to your loved ones & let’s all get thru this awful period alive.” Finally, she retweeted a fan
