The weather is turning warmer, so it's time for Spring Cleaning at my place! Time to follow all the well-meaning advice from the multitude of home organization blogs, the countless reels I've saved on TikTok on purging all the stuff that I haven't used in 6 months and on and on. However, if you're like me, you sometimes struggle with the motivation to get started on this big task and motiving your kids to get rid of their old toys suddenly becomes a battle royale. Toys and stuffed animals they haven't even batted an eye at in years suddenly become the subject of intense negotiations. I feel you, trust me.

Recently, my teenager and I decided to tackle her impressive collection of stuffed animals. It can be overwhelming to decide which toys will make the cut; however, we discovered that the nursing home near our neighborhood has a memory care unit. According to AgeGracefullyCare.com Alzheimer's patients often use stuffed animals as comfort items, so after a quick call to confirm that they accept new and gently used stuffies, my teen was excited to pare down her stuffed animals and donate for such a good cause.

Donation Tips

  • Ensure all items are clean and in good condition.
  • Contact the organization beforehand to confirm their requirements.
  • For tax deductions, request a receipt from the nonprofit.

Inspired, I went on a hunt to find other lesser-known organizations that could use stuffies and toys. Check out this list and let it motivate you during your spring cleaning this season!

Senior Centers and Nursing Homes

Many senior centers or nursing homes accept gently used stuffed animals as they can provide comfort and sensory stimulation to Alzheimer’s patients. Call your local facilities to inquire.

Cumberland County Department of Public Health

The department accepts toy donations, including stuffed animals, for events like the annual Kids Holiday Party. Donations can be dropped off at the Health Education Division, 1235 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville. Since this is fairly seasonal call 910-433-3600 for more details on when they are accepting donations.

Seth’s Wish

This local organization provides direct aid to families in need and accepts donations of toys and stuffed animals. Reach out via their social media or community groups for drop-off locations

Stuffed Animals For Emergencies SAFE

SAFE collects gently used stuffed animals, cleans them, and distributes them to children in crisis situations through local organizations. While there isn’t a dedicated chapter in Fayetteville, you can contact SAFE to find nearby partners or organize a donation drive.

Cumberland County Animal Services

Cumberland County Animal Services located on 4704 Corporation Drive Fayetteville, NC 28306 collects donated items like stuffed animals, blankets, and other items for the animals in their care, with the exception of bed pillows.
