Several Cumberland County Cooling Stations Opening Starting This Saturday
As summer has officially hit, so have the hot temperatures, and that means Cumberland County cooling stations are ready to open up.
In Fayetteville and the rest of Cumberland County, proactive measures are being taken to protect residents from the scorching summer heat. The cooling stations around the county will open starting Saturday, June 22.
As temperatures continue to rise, the county is offering a variety of locations where people can find relief from the oppressive heat.
Cumberland County Cooling Stations
- Library locations are open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Headquarters Library at 300 Maiden Lane, Fayetteville, along with Cliffdale, North Regional and Hope Mills branches, are also open Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. To find your nearest library location, go to cumberlandcountync.gov/departments/library-group/library.
- The first-floor lobby of the Cumberland County Department of Public Health, located at 1235 Ramsey St., is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Masks or face coverings are required for individuals experiencing symptoms related to a respiratory illness (COVID-19, RSV, flu).
- The Cumberland County Department of Social Services, located at 1225 Ramsey St., will open the auxiliary lobby as a cooling station. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. All public lobbies will be available to citizens. Masks or face coverings are required for individuals experiencing symptoms related to a respiratory illness (COVID-19, RSV, flu).
Other county facilities, such as the Department of Public Health, will also open their doors to provide relief from the heat. These cooling stations will remain open at least through Sunday, June 30, ensuring that residents have access to cool spaces throughout the week-long heat wave.
To combat the intense heat, the city of Fayetteville and the county are collaborating to open nearly 30 Cumberland County cooling stations. This joint effort demonstrates the commitment of local authorities to prioritize the well-being of their residents during extreme weather conditions.
When visiting Cumberland County cooling stations, or when out this weekend individuals are encouraged to wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing, find shade, avoid high-energy activities during midday heat, and stay hydrated by drinking fluids.
According to Cumberland County, as the summer of 2024 progresses, they will remain vigilant in monitoring weather conditions and are prepared to extend the operation of cooling stations if necessary. By providing these essential services, the county aims to ensure that all residents, especially vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those without access to air conditioning, can find relief and stay safe during the hot summer months.
