Celebrate ‘Squirrel Awareness Month’ With This Ray Stevens Classic
October is Squirrel Awareness Month and no, I am not making this up, just ask Ray Stevens.
According to National Today: “Squirrel Awareness Month is an annual event held in October to raise awareness of squirrels. While many people consider eastern grey squirrels to be pests who consume all of their birdseed, congregate around urban garbage cans in search of pizza crusts, construct nests in the walls of houses, or cause damage to gardens, squirrels are much more than that. They are essential components of the ecology, and they are also quite attractive. Squirrels have a very vital function in the ecology, namely in forest regeneration. Because of their feeding and food-saving habits, they make significant contributions to the makeup of plant communities.”
There are many ways to celebrate Squirrel Awareness Month, from planting trees to feeding squirrels in public parks.
However, my favorite way to celebrate is by playing Ray Steven’s The Mississippi Squirrel Revival, loudly, to my friends and family as much as I can get away with.
And why wouldn’t I? It’s a comic masterpiece and I feel it’s my duty to introduce this gem to the next generation.
So celebrate Squirrel Awareness Month in style with this Ray Stevens contribution to not only American music, but also American comedy!
