The Unexpected Friendship Between Chris Janson and The Rock
It was less than a week ago that country star Chris Janson and The Rock released the music video for his brand new single, “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get.”
Yes, you read that correctly. While the song itself is indeed a fun and lively addition to Janson’s discography, the real buzz behind the music video was the unexpected inclusion of wrestling legend and Hollywood A-lister Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
As I’ve mentioned before, I always love when two of my biggest fandoms – pro wrestling and country music – come together. And I love it even more when the pairing comes from this far out of left field. I had to do a double take when I saw the name featured on the music video, and I even raised the people’s eyebrow out of sheer intrigue.
Rocky and Janson are clearly having fun in the video, which features the unlikely duo mudding through an open field in an old Ford pickup while rocking matching hats from Bass Pro Shop. Seeing the hillbilly hitmaker and the people’s champ hanging out and being buds is a surreal yet wholesome sight to behold.
How Chris Janson and The Rock Became Friends
In a behind-the-scenes video on The Rock’s YouTube channel, the two explain how they came to meet and befriend one another. Janson explained that his son spotted Rock while they were at a in California. “My kid says, ‘I think that’s The Rock.’ I said, ‘…it IS The Rock,'” Janson said. After getting a picture with the Great One, Chris and Dwayne then struck up a conversation in which they discovered their mutual admiration for the Grand Ole Opry and Hank Williams Jr.
“It takes a real redneck to like that kind of stuff,” quipped Janson right before he and Rock performed an acoustic duet cover of Hank Jr.’s “Blues Man.”
A kinship quickly formed between them from that day on, with Rock sharing his admiration for Janson’s work ethic and modest approach. “What really moved and impressed me about Chris and his family was his humility,” said Rock, “…and his desire to not only work hard and take care of his family…but also just do it with grace and style.”
It is likely that respect which motivated Rocky to find time to appear in this music video at the same time he was preparing for his WWE WrestleMania match. With how hectic the man’s schedule is, it’s likely that Rock was thrilled to spend a day just bro-ing out and drinking with one of his good friends. Will we one day see Chris Janson and The Rock together in a wrestling ring to fight for the tag team championship? DO YOU SMELL WHAT THE ROCK AND REDNECK ARE COOKIN’?
