The Big Wake Up With Don Chase and Sarah

There are so many iconic fall images in the movies. But which ones make the most memorable films?

If there’s one thing I know, it’s how to embrace Fall! As an Autumn baby myself, October is the perfect time to kick-off your seasonal movie marathon with 13 of the best fall movies!

I can think of so many go-to favorites and comfort movies during this time of year. Everything from movies I watched when I was younger that shaped my childhood all the way up to recent movies that tickled my funny bone!

On a chilly Fall weekend, nothing is better than cozying up with a warm drink or comfort meal, grabbing a blanket, lighting a candle, and watching a great movie! Call me basic, but that sounds like heaven to this homebody!

These 13 movies range from family friendly to adult dark comedy. While vastly different, I think the movies on this list accurately portray the feelings of Fall, colder weather, holiday seasons, mystery, intrigue, and love.

  • Practical Magic

Who doesn’t love the Midnight Margaritas scene?? My sister and I used to watch this movie in my Aunt’s living room all the time. The soundtrack is so good, Sandra Bullock is gorgeous, and it’s the perfect witchy love movie to get the season started.

  • Hocus Pocus

Come on now, you didn’t think I’d leave out Hocus Pocus, did you? One word: CLASSIC. The perfect 90’s Halloween film for any kid. As soon as a touch of Fall is in the air, this mvie practically becomes my background music.

  • Little Women

I’ve seen many versions, movie and tv, of the classic novel Little Women. Greta Gerwig’s latest adaptation is by far my favorite. The bulk of the movie shows this family during the holiday season, so it tugs at the heartstrings of that time of year.

  • Hubie Halloween

Adam Sandler brings the laughs and mystery with Netflix’s Hubie Halloween! It hit the platform in 2020, and in typical Adam Sandler fashion, a ton of his Hollywood comedy friends join him in this laugh out loud Halloween movie! After watching it, it instantly got added to my “Oh that’s an every year movie” list.

  • Knives Out

I love a good who dunnit murder mystery! Add in the huge stars and handsome men like Chris Evans, and I’m sold! The humor in this movie is underrated and it instantly became a favorite of mine!

  • October Sky

Based off the true story of Homer Hickam and the Rocket Boys from Coalwood, WV, October Sky reinforced my love for period piece movies. It’s such a feel-good movie of discovering and achieving your dreams. The backdrop of Fall just adds to the comfort level this movie brings me.

  • Beetlejuice

The dinner scene! Singing and dancing to Harry Belafonte “The Banana Boat Song” is still one of my favorite moments in that movie! The spooky vibes of this whole movie just encompass great Halloween movie viewing.

  • Clue

Another murder mystery on my list! This 80’s movie based off the infamous board game of the same name is one of my favorite movies of all time. Tim Curry is a master of comedy and I could not love this movie any more! I watch it year-round but Halloween makes it even better!

  • One Fine Day

Another one of my favorite movies growing up! My sister and I were obsessed with George Clooney (honestly, who isn’t?). Michelle Pfeiffer is a knockout! The 2 of them together in this 90s romcom just screams Fall to me. Plus the kids are adorable!

  • The Addams Family

Christina Ricci was one of the most famous child actors in the 90s. She was honestly in every one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid. She knocked the role of Wednesday Addams out of the park! Nothing says Halloween and spooky more than the Addams Family movies.

  • Homeward Bound

I know this one might seem like an odd movie to have on the list. But all I can picture is the ending scene of the movie with all the fall leaves… and Shadow… slowly coming up to view… and saying, “Peter.” Oh, if you know you know!!!! I’m tearing up just writing this.

  • Casper

Everyone’s favorite friendly ghost. Some movies just stand the test of time. I still love Casper. Plus everyone my age fell in love with Devon Sawa whispering “Can I keep you?” Swoon….

  • The Harry Potter Series

Ok I know…. this one’s a stretch. But come on! How could I not include my favorite film series! In the first movie, there’s that classic Halloween Feast scene in the Great Hall. And in the 3rd movie they have the Hogwarts Chorus singing “Double Double Toil & Trouble”. Add on the whole witches and wizards thing and it’s the perfect series for the cooler months of the year!
