New Parking Deck Slated For Downtown Fayetteville in Cumberland County Courthouse Parking Lot
Cumberland County heard the public complaints about losing parking for the new Crown Event Center, and has announced a parking deck will be built in Downtown Fayetteville behind the courthouse.
With the new Crown Event Center slated to be built on the front parking lot of the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse, there was much debate over where people would park. Not only for the courthouse, but for events at the new event facility, and the Law Enforcement Center.
“Staff anticipates construction of a six-level, double-ramp parking deck with 1,100 stalls of parking,” a release from Cumberland County said. “The deck will also incorporate charging stations for electric vehicles. … the estimated project cost is $33 million. Staff recommended using the Design-Build construction delivery method for the project to provide the greatest flexibility to meet the County’s goals and deliver the project within the established timeline.”
When the Commissioners announced the new Crown Event Center location in front of the courthouse in 2022, the biggest debate centered around available parking in the downtown area for such a facility. The new building would eliminate 203 spaces in the lot it is being built on.
“In terms of a timeline, the RFQ will be posted on Nov. 21, 2023, and will close on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023. Walker said he anticipates project design starting in early 2024 with completion in mid-2025. Anyone interested in viewing or responding to the RFQ should go to cumberlandcountync.gov/bids and click on “Bid Opportunities” to search for all active bid opportunities.”
The Crown Theatre and Crown Arena on the site of the Crown Coliseum are slated to close by October 2025. That was the target date to have a new facility complete in Downtown Fayetteville. The Crown Coliseum, Crown Expo Center and Crown Ballroom are not impacted by the closures.
