GALLERY: Lightning Doesn’t Stop (But Does Delay) Luke Combs Concert in Charlotte
Mother Nature did her best to stop Luke Combs from performing his concert on night two in Charlotte, NC, in the home of the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium last Saturday night.
Leading up to doors opening, heavy rainfall, thunder, and lightning struck the area, causing many to duck for cover. Once it subsided, the stadium opened and fans started filling in their seats.
Before her set, opener Lainey Wilson’s equipment was apparently struck by lightning during those earlier storms, and she had to perform her set acoustic with just one other guitar player on stage with her. Of course, it’s Lainey Wilson, and she did a fantastic job regardless!
Riley Green got lucky and had his full band during his set with no issues.
When Luke Combs hit the stage, the weather came back for vengeance. He was only on for 5 minutes when he announced he had to leave the stage due to more lightning in the area. Obviously, there was nothing he could do, but he promised to stay and perform, even if it meant we were there until 5 am. And he lived up to that promise.
The stadium kept us updated with reports, but the concourses were filled with fans ducking for cover from both rain and lightning. The lighting is what really delayed the show for over an hour. And I felt so bad for those who had already been waiting since doors opened before 5 pm.
Once the area got the all clear and fans were let back in by security to their seats, the stadium flooded with people ready to hear their hometown favorite fresh off his latest number-one single! By the time Luke came back on stage, it was after 10:45 pm and the concert didn’t wrap up until after midnight.
As usual, Luke Combs did not disappoint with his Charlotte concert. He continues to be one of the nicest, most giving and fair-minded country artists. North Carolina is lucky to have him as our own, and I know he made Charlotte proud.
