Downtown Dunn To Get Glow Up With Chalk Fest on October 5
Chalk Fest 2024 is set to transform downtown Dunn, North Carolina into a vibrant outdoor art gallery on Saturday, October 5.
This annual event, organized by the Harnett County Arts Council, brings together artists and community members to create colorful chalk masterpieces on the city’s streets.
The festival will take place in the Dunn City Parking lot, located at the corner of N Clinton Avenue and E Edgerton Street, behind Sherry’s Bakery. This central location provides an ideal canvas for artists to showcase their talents and for visitors to enjoy the creative process.
Chalk Fest draws inspiration from the Italian tradition of street painting known as “i madonnari,” which dates back to the 16th century. Artists of all skill levels will have the opportunity to transform pavement into stunning works of art using chalk and pastels. The event encourages both the reproduction of existing artworks and the creation of original pieces.
The festival is not just for professional artists. Community members and families are invited to participate, making it an inclusive event that fosters creativity and brings people together. Spectators can watch the art unfold throughout the day, enjoying the transformation of ordinary streets into extraordinary canvases.
The City of Dunn has been involved in the planning process, addressing aspects such as parking plans, entrance and exit strategies, and coordination with local businesses. This ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience for both participants and visitors.
The cost to participate is $25 for a 4 foot-by-4 foot square. One box of pastel multi-colored chalk will be provided. Registration deadline is 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.
Chalking time for artists is 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; judging and awards will be presented at 4 p.m. The event is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.chalkfest.art or contact the Harnett County Arts Council at 919-906-7711.
