North Carolina Native Scotty McCreery Wins St. Jude ‘Angels Among Us’ Award
Every year during the annual Country Cares for St. Jude Seminar, the last evening’s dinner is a special one – and this year it was incredibly special for North Carolina native Scotty McCreery.
It wraps up the weekend’s events and includes a special show by surprise Country artists. This year during dinner, we were serenaded by Craig Morgan, Scotty McCreery, and Randy Owen of Alabama.
Scotty, as you may know, walked away as the recipient that evening of the Angels Among Us award for his efforts in spreading the word of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Here’s our conversation about St. Jude and fatherhood, with Scotty McCreery:
Afterward, Scotty and I talked about just what that meant to him and his plans moving forward. Here’s the full transcript of the conversation.
SARAH WEAVER, WKML: Sarah here with Scotty McCreery, back from Memphis, Tennessee and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and you were the recipient this year of the Angels Among Us Award. Congratulations. What does that feel like, to be included with artists who have paved the way, like Darius Rucker and Brad Paisley, Jake Owen, FGL, Lady A, what does that feel like to be a recipient of this award?
SCOTTY MCCREERY: Feels really amazing to be included with artists like Darius Rucker, Brad Paisley, Jake Owen, FGL and Lady A, to get get this award from St. Jude. All those artists are people that I look up to. I love their music, and I look up to what they’ve done to raise money and raise funds for St. Jude. So, just to be included with artists like that is such an honor.
SARAH: Well, a well deserved honor for sure. How has becoming a father changed your perspective of St. Jude and its impacts? (Scotty’s wife Gabi is due with their first child any day now!)
SCOTTY: Yeah, becoming a Dad… it’s really changed my perspective on what St. Jude is doing over there. I mean they are really going above and beyond to help these children, to help these families. By them not having to pay a dime of the medical bills, but also just the research they’re doing for cancer research all around the world. They’re doing amazing things for these kids, and I know if anything ever did happen – God forbid – to my kid, I would want to send them to a place like St. Jude.
SARAH: Do you have any hopes or plans for growing your involvement with the St. Jude community even further?
SCOTTY: Yeah, we like to support St. Jude any way we can. Whether it be, you know, golf tournaments – we’ve done those – different shows that we’ve been able to do, to raise money for them, and I’m sure we’re gonna have a bunch of those in the future. Every little bit helps.
SARAH: All right, and everybody wants to know, aside from fatherhood, what is 2023 going to look like for you?
SCOTTY: 2023 is gonna be a fun year. It’s definitely going to be different with a baby on the way, and bringing the baby out on the road and touring. I have been touring for a long time, but never with Mini Me out there. So, I’m looking forward to that. Just having Gabi and a little kid out there, and staying busy, making music. We’re gonna hopefully have a new album out, and it’s gonna be a fun year!
SARAH: Scotty, thank you so much again for taking the time out to talk to us. We’re so proud of you and congratulations again on the Angels Among Us Award, and for what you do with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We love that about you, and you’re really helping to make a difference out there.
