Kick Butt Tip: Replace the Word Failure – James Dyson
Beginning today, let’s replace the word Failure with the word Result. I lifted that idea from a book by James Dyson Invention: A Life Of Learning Through Failure.
Now, if you’re asking who in the world is James Dyson, you may have one of his famous vacuum cleaners at home or at your office. That vacuum cleaner idea actually made James Dyson a billionaire.
There’s a great story behind inventing the Dyson vacuum cleaner. In his book, Dyson says that he failed over 5000 times before getting the invention right. If you’re wondering why he didn’t give up, Dyson says it is because he does not know the word “failure.” Dyson says that he eliminated the word “failure” from his vocabulary and then replaced it with the word result. Dyson says, when you take an action, you get a result. Now, if the result that you get is not the result that you want, learn from that experience. By learning you will be one step closer to reaching whatever goal you have set.
History is full of stories of entrepreneurs who just refused to give up. Two great stories instantly come to mind.
Do you remember who invented the light bulb? You are correct. Thomas Edison. But did you know that Edison actually failed one thousand times to get the result he was looking for? It took Edison one thousand attempts before he was able to create a successful filament for the light bulb.
And, if you check the brand names that you have at home, you likely have the Proctor & Gamble logo on at least one item. Many years ago, Proctor & Gamble wanted to give the company that made Clorox some competition. So, in the city of Portland, Maine, P&G advertised their newest product that contained bleach. The effort was a huge logistical mistake. The effort flopped when the Clorox company caught wind and to retaliate, sent a free one-gallon container of Clorox to every Portland, Maine home.
Go get ’em tiger! God don’t make no junk. You, yes you are awesome! Now go be awesome!
