David Goggins: Don’t Please Others At the Expense Of Yourself
Today’s Kick Butt Tip of the Day comes from David Goggins.
When I think of superhuman beings, a picture of David Goggins flashes in my mind.
Today, Goggins is retired from the United States Navy where he achieved the designation of a Navy Seal. Goggins is also a member of the prestigious International Sports Hall of Fame.
Check out these words of wisdom from David Goggins: “One thing that I did wrong in my life for so many years was that I tried to please people. I did it at the expense of myself. I was leaving a lot in the tank. And when you do that, you stop living. The people in your life are extremely happy. Because you’re giving them everything they want. Their life is full. But you feel empty and that is not a relationship to me.”
David Goggins is living proof that anyone can truly live for themselves. But Don, I have no idea where to start.
First, I would recommend to take inventory of where you are this moment. Divide a piece of paper in half. On one piece, make a list of everything that truly brings joy into your life. On the other piece of paper, write down all of the things that cause stress in your life. The first list is the most important because it clearly reveals who and what is most important in your life. Let me encourage you to find a way to let the people on this list know just how much they mean to you. You can effectively do this with a visit or a phone call or you can buy a card and write a short note. Let me tell you, when someone gets your card, with your handwriting and your heartfelt words, it will mean more than you will ever know.
Now, the second piece of paper is going to require a little elbow grease. In reference to the stress-producing items you listed, is the anxiety that you put yourself through really worth it? Ask yourself, what are you gaining? Are you making progress in these challenging areas of your life? Are you truly moving forward, staying the same or getting a little rusty? What will it take to make you happy and less stressed? Once this last question is answered, immediately start your journey to the new and improved you.
Go get ’em tiger! God don’t make no junk. You, yes you are awesome! Now go be awesome!
