Pledge of Allegiance for April 15-19 – Plus a Brief History of Fort Liberty
If you are curious like me, you may have wondered how Fort Liberty, one of the largest military installations in the world, came to call the Sandhills region of North Carolina home.
Prior to being called Fort Liberty and Fort Bragg, Camp Bragg was a training center that taught soldiers how to effectively use various types of weapons and ammunitions during a conflict.
At the time, the name Camp Bragg came from General Braxton Bragg. Bragg, a native of the Tar Heel State, was at the time honored as a distinguished veteran for his bravery and leadership in the battles of Buena Vista, Monterrey and Fort Texas.
Prior to Camp Bragg, the Scottish Highlanders settled in the area in the 1700’s building homes, churches and taking advantage of the thousands of acres of woodlands in the area.
Speaking of churches, two churches the Scottish Highlanders constructed, the Long Street Presbyterian Church and the Sandy Grove Presbyterian Church remain standing today. These churches are by far, the oldest structures on Fort Liberty.
In the early 1900’s, the government began purchasing property and expanding military operations in the area. In just five short years, the military swallowed up an amazing 50,000 acres of land for future training.
In 1922, Camp Bragg became Fort Bragg. Ten years later, the first hospital was constructed.
In the year 2022, a new name, Fort Liberty was submitted to the Congressional Naming Commission.
Today, Fort Liberty is home to over 140,000 acres making the reservation one of the largest military training installations on Earth.
