Man Frees Crocodile With Tire Around Its Neck in Indonesia
A remarkable story out of Indonesia, as a crocodile that had been living with a motorcycle tire around its neck for YEARS, is finally free thanks to a local man.
According to the Associated Press, a man in Palu trapped the crocodile and cut the tire off. Locals had seen the crocodile with a tire on its neck as far back as 2016. There had also been a reward to help encourage someone to help free the crocodile. But many attempts over the years had failed.
“I have experiences and skills in catching animals, not only birds, but farm animals that are released from the cage,” Tili, who goes by a single name, told The Associated Press. “I believe I can rescue the crocodile with my skills.”
Tili used a series of ropes and traps, and the crocodile still managed to get away several times.
“He stringed ropes of various sizes into a trap tied to a tree near the river, and laid chickens, ducks and birds as bait,” the Associated Press story said. “After three weeks of waiting and several failed attempts, the crocodile finally fell into the trap Monday night. With the help of two of his friends, Tili pulled the trapped crocodile ashore and sawed through the tire, which was 50 centimeters (1.6 feet) in diameter.”
“For all of the efforts Tili has done for protected wildlife and being the kind of animal lover he is, that’s a great milestone,” said Hamma who heads Central Sulawesi province’s conservation agency, told the Associated Press.
