Pledge of Allegiance: A Look at Fayetteville’s History Museum
I have to be honest, sometimes it just frustrates me when I hear people that have lived here their entire lives say, there’s nothing to do in Fayetteville and Cumberland County.
In my humble opinion, there are so many things to see and do. In fact, let me invite you and your family to visit historic 325 Franklin Street in downtown Fayetteville. That’s where you will find the famous Fayetteville History Museum.
The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Fayetteville History Museum is closed on Sunday and Monday. There is no admission to the museum.
Did you know that in the 1800’s, Fayetteville was the second largest city in the entire state of North Carolina? The reason behind the city’s rapid growth was thanks to the nearby Cape Fear River and the convenient trade route with the Port City of Wilmington, North Carolina. Discover more on that fantastic story when you visit the Fayetteville History Museum.
Another fascinating story is that at one time, the Fayetteville History Museum was the train depot for the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad Company. Back then and now, trains played a pivotal role in the development of the area.
After touring the Fayetteville History Museum, travel a few steps next door to the Museum Annex where you will be able to actually see a 1920’s Fayetteville Fire Department fire engine along with an 1880’s steam pump fire engine.
Additional displays include pieces of actual plank roads from historic Fayetteville, information on area farm life, the Fayetteville Airport and a whole lot more. You will also enjoy the vintage antique car display and even a recreated 1920’s gas station.
One of the most popular events at the Fayetteville History Museum is the Saturday Farmers and Craft Market. The market is open from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. At the market you will find local farmers, local artists, local crafters, wood turners and the freshest locally grown vegetables money can buy. The Farmers and Craft Market is held every Saturday.
